Warning to parents
LPD noticing gang activity in area

By Angie Mayes
Rutherford Courier, 1998

When it comes to gangs, La Vergne is not immune, La Vergne Police Department Sgt. Nick Watson -- of the Narcotics/Gang Unit -- warns.

"We had some gang activity around the Clayton Estates, around Sand Hill Road, Clayton Estates Trailer Park earlier this month," Watson said. "We ended up arresting two people -- one juvenile and one adult -- for vandalism of a trailer on Christopher Street."

The adult, Thomas Lee Andrews, 19, of La Vergne, confessed to the vandalism, Watson said. He is being charged with the crime in La Vergne City Court.

Dell Comfirms Nashville: Pickard

By Angie Mayes
Rutherford Courier, 1999

Officials from the Dell Computer Corporation have told La Vergne leaders that they plan to locate operation expansion in Metro Nashville, La Vergne City Adminstrator Don Pickard said.

After months of negotiating with a number of entities including Brentwood, Murfreesboro, La Vergne and -- most recently Nashville -- Dell decided on Nashville because of La Vergne's phone systems, Pickard said.

He was informed of Dell's decision on Friday by Dell officials Charlie Ball and Kip Thompson, he said, noting that the lack of a phone system able to handle Dell's needs is the number one reason that Dell chose Nashville over La Vergne.

"They decided to go to Nashville because the phone system in La Vergne (TDS Telecom) was not able to support their system," Pickard said. "They phone needs would probably double the size of the existing phone operations. In three years, they said they would have more phone service in that one company than all of La Vergne combined.

Upper level management at TDS Telecom, told Dell they could honor their needs, Pickard said, but Dell chose not to go that route.

Cedar Grove teacher mixes art, music to teach

By Angie Mayes
Rutherford Courier, 1997

Cedar Grove art teacher Jim Chapman thought it would be "weird to go back to teaching."

After all it'd been a couple of years since he'd graced the halls of an elementary school as a teacher.

"I thoguht it would be like a failure," he said last week while carefully painting the word "Timeberwolves" over the school's logo in the lobby of the new Smyrna school. "It's been fun, though. The kids have been receptive and the teachers have been neat about everything."

Chapman's even been asked to sing. Sing?
